Although fluoroscopy is an important aid while advancing catheters in the heart, it is not sufficient to supply accurate anatomical information on the position of veins, ridges, and septa in the heart. Furthermore radiation exposure forms a risk to both the patient and the operator. Intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) is a promising technique for imaging of intracardiac structures, and may serve as an alternative for the transoesophageal approach, which is semiinvasive and requires anaesthesiology. The introduction of ICE catheters with low frequencies allows accurate visualisation of intracardiac anatomical structures with an ultrasound catheter placed exclusively in the right side of the heart. This report focuses on the use of ICE in guiding percutaneous interventional procedures.

متن کاملThe use of intracardiac echocardiography and other intracardiac imaging tools to guide noncoronary cardiac interventions.
The limitations of standard fluoroscopy have led to the development of improved imaging techniques to guide noncoronary cardiac interventions. Imaging tools that are used in the interventional laboratory can be categorized as invasive and noninvasive. Noninvasive cardiac imaging tools include ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. These modalities can generate high-res...
متن کاملTechnology update: intracardiac echocardiography – a review of the literature
The development of new imaging tools helps in better investigation of cardiac structures and function by showing detailed images during interventional procedures. Intracardiac echocardiography plays a pivotal role as an intraoperative real-time imaging tool during invasive cardiac procedures. Initially, this echocardiographic technique was particularly useful when transthoracic image quality wa...
متن کاملA prospective comparison of cardiac imaging using intracardiac echocardiography with transesophageal echocardiography in patients with atrial fibrillation: the intracardiac echocardiography guided cardioversion helps interventional procedures study.
BACKGROUND The Intracardiac Echocardiography Guided Cardioversion Helps Interventional Procedures study evaluated the concordance of intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) with transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS AND RESULTS Patients with AF undergoing right heart catheterization underwent left atrium (LA) and interatrial septal (IAS) imaging...
متن کاملWhy is intracardiac echocardiography helpful? Benefits, costs, and how to learn
Current interventional procedures in structural heart disease and cardiac arrhythmias require peri-interventional echocardiographic monitoring and guidance to become as safe, expedient, and well-tolerated for patients as possible. Intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) complements and has in part replaced transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE), including real-time three-dimensional (RT-3D) imagin...
